here is the post where the future will see how absolutely UNDERRATED hiroyuki sanada is.
He should've been famous or at least as recognized like 10 or 20 years ago.
This man was in two marvel movies, one was in X Men with Hugh Jackman, and one in Endgame but his character was there to be killed by Hawkeye but still. Go sword fighting!!
He was also in Rush Hour(aka the most badass and iconic movie trilogy ever) with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. Also in a movie w Brad Pitt (Bullet Train), in two movies w Keanu Reeves (47 Ronin, John Wick), ALSO w Tom Cruise (The Last Samurai and if I'm not mistaken there's one more but I forgot), he was also in a movie w Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds(Life).
He deserved all those roles, and he was in so so many big movies, yet he is still so underrated. Man is 60 years old, moving and swinging his sword faster than anyone his age, trust me I'm not even 20 and I'm having back pains just by standing for 30 minutes. A phenomenal actor, very handsome, amazing chemistry with all of the actors he works with, also very sweet and humble. No controversies or dramas.

Takashi Yamazaki: Visionary Filmmaker and VFX Pioneer

Yamazaki’s extensive filmography includes critically acclaimed works such as Always: Sunset on Third Street, The Eternal Zero, and Stand by Me Doraemon. Emmy Prediction 2024 Lead Actor (Limited)
Benedict Cumberbatch “Eric”
Michael Douglas “Franklin”
Jon Hamm *** “Fargo”
Tom Hollander “Feud: Capote...”
Hiroyuki Sanada “Shо̄gun”
Andrew Scott “Ripley”
Oh interesting. What a fiercely good category in an otherwise lackluster year of TV! I did declare 2024 the year of Andrew Scott way back in December 2023 and even though I didn’t like Vanya if he wins an Olivier and an Emmy back to back it’ll be so iconic and such a deserved apology for the lack of Oscar/BAFTA nom.
All that said I find it so weird that we can now predict award nominees when multiple shows haven’t even been released yet and don’t even have reviews out yet. I’d rather we pretended it was a real nomination race

So I watched "Bullet Train" (A while ago but that's not important)
Since it's been a while since the movie came out I feel pretty safe but never the less Spoilers!
If I had to describe "Bullet Train" I'd call it Hollywood's greatest attempt at emulating less conventional methods of storytelling. With the original text being written by Kōtarō Isaka as a novel (and that end, I have no idea what liberties were taken with its production, and adaptation compared to the original story) and because of that fact it may be cringe to say that on my first viewing, I thought the film felt like something that would do well as a single season 12 episode cult classic anime from the mid-nineties to early two-thousands. Everything from the film's setting to the characters screams that sort of slightly absurdist charm that you'd usually see from that era of anime and manga. A collection of assassins board a bullet train in Japan for a myriad of different yet interconnected reasons strung along by a well-foreshadowed central antagonist and a mysterious yet charismatic dark horse, all taking place in a black humor thriller.
Yuichi Kimura is a father out for the blood of the person that put his son on life support struggling with his position as a father demands of him. Not knowing that his decision had left him as a pawn in a dangerous game he does not completely understand.
Ladybug (which is what I will forever refer to this character archetype as) is a charismatic if oafish thief who seems to live in a state of perpetual bad luck however never fatally succumbing to it. returns to work after a stent away from attempting to reevaluate his choices and steer himself away from some of the more unsavory aspects of his profession and more often than not failing miserably at it.
Lemon/Tangerine, a dynamic duo of hitmen who share a familial bond that goes deeper than blood. The former of the two possessing a humorous yet undeniably advantageous character quirk iconic of the film. While the latter becomes an instant fan favorite due to his relatable yet enviable personality. Both of which serve as the poster children for the film.
The Wolf, a self-made legend of the Mexican cartel who shot up the ranks of his organization with his charisma, intellect, and brutality finds himself in Japan to find the murderer of not only his beloved but his partners in crime. An impressive back story for someone who dies within ten minutes of being introduced.
Hiroyuki Sanada, a disgraced former yakuza and the father of one of the other characters also comes to find the would be assassin of his grandson only to be presented the chance to settle a grudge thats haunted him for the better part of his life.
Last but not least The Prince, the dark horse of the film whose motivations and origins tantalize the viewers the entire runtime. The character you love to hate and a secondary antagonist who far outshines the main one. My hat goes off to Joey King for her performance from this absolute menace The Prince is one of my favorite aspects of the film, the fact that the vast majority of situations she's faced with go her way which helps her be more hatable yet interesting as a character. I'm especially fond of her aesthetic as a character she's not a traditional fem fatal but she still leverages her femininity to achieve her goals falling into that gap-moe of having this adolescent schoolgirl design yet being this conniving machiavellian character.
Now after hearing that line up tell me this doesn't sound like an instant cult hit of a dark comedy. Overall I'm quite fond of the film and if you haven't seen it and didn't heed my warning at the top please watch it its quite the treat. for those who have watched the film and just wanted to read this for yucks, I suggest you read the source material Kōtarō Isaka's Maria Beetle if you can find it.

Shōgun!
Shōgun: The much-anticipated Japan-set show has finally landed.—Cosmo Jarvis as the English ship pilot John Blackthorne, whose vessel was wrecked upon the Japanese coast in the early 17th century. After losing his ship to a violent storm, the English navigator finds himself in an endless web of complex politics and power play in Japan and is forced to deal with the two most powerful men in Japan these days. He is thrown amid a war between Toranaga and Ishido, who struggle for the title of Shōgun which will give ultimate power to the one who possesses it.
The term shōgun, which means “general who quells barbarians,” is an ancient military term that was adopted in the twelfth century for the dominant warlord who held political and martial power in Japan while the emperor in Kyoto maintained his position as figural head of state and cultural leader.

The original Shōgun, a five-part miniseries based on James Clavell’s best-selling 1975 doorstop, was a massive hit when it aired on ABC in 1980. Nearly a third of American households tuned in to watch a cast led by Richard Chamberlain and the iconic Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune retell the tale of an English navigator’s adventures in feudal Japan. The series won three Emmys and three Golden Globes. The series and book triggered a wave of interest in feudal Japan.

Shōgun: The First Novel of the Asian saga. Set in the year 1600, it tells the story of a bold English pilot whose ship was blown ashore in Japan, where he encountered two people who were to change his life: a warlord with his own quest for power, and a beautiful interpreter torn between two ways of life and two ways of love.
Shōgun is a 1975 historical fiction novel by James Clavell, set during the late Sengoku period in Japan. It serves as the first novel in the internal chronology of the author's Asian Saga. A notable best-seller, by 1990 the book had sold 15 million copies worldwide.
About the author
James Clavell, the son of a Royal Navy family, was educated in Portsmouth before, as a young artillery officer, he was captured by the Japanese at the Fall of Singapore. It was on this experience that his bestselling novel KING RAT was based. He maintained this oriental interest in his other great works: TAI-PAN, SHOGUN, NOBLE HOUSE and GAI JIN.
Clavell lived for many years in Vancouver and Los Angeles, before settling in Switzerland, where he died in 1994.
youtube
Shōgun (2024)
The new Shōgun, whose two-episode premiere comes to FX and Hulu, is not a remake so much as a radical reimagining. Adapted directly from Clavell’s novel, this sprawling, 10-part historical drama takes a far broader view than its predecessor. The series will have a total of 10 episodes, releasing a new chapter every week following the premiere. The release of its first two episodes is on Tuesday, February 27th 2024.
Shōgun is a historical drama based on James Clavell's novel, focusing on English sailor John Blackthorne's experiences in Japan and the power struggle among various leaders. Pilot John Blackthorne, also known as Anjin-san, is the protagonist of James Clavell's 1975 novel Shōgun.
The novel is inspired by the real-life story of William Adams, an English sailor who travelled to Japan in the 1600s played a crucial role in Japan's overseas trading, and rose to high rank in the service of the shōgun. The series follows fictional Englishman John Blackthorne's (Cosmo Jarvis) transforming experiences and political intrigues in feudal Japan in the early 17th century. Shōgun assigns details to characters that match their historical counterparts and has influenced other works, such as video games and films.
Tumblr media
Hiroyuki Sanada headlines Shōgun as Lord Yoshii Toranaga. The Japanese actor and world-renowned martial artist is most known for his roles in films such as John Wick: Chapter 4, Bullet Train, Mortal Kombat, 47 Ronin, Army of the Dead and The Last Samurai . Shōgun isn't his first foray into television either, having appeared in Season 3 of The Last Ship, Seasons 2 and 4 of Westworld, and Season 6 of Lost.
With Shōgun, for the first time after more than three decades of work in his nearly 60 years of acting, the icon Hiroyuki Sanada took on the project of a lifetime. He received his first-ever producer credit on the show, painstakingly poring over every detail of the production’s lavish, nuanced portrait of feudal Japan. And he found himself giving a performance unlike any he’d given before.
To this end, actor Hiroyuki Sanada was brought on board not only to play the lead role of wise, strategic Lord Yoshii Toranaga, but also as an executive producer. Sanada, a major star in his native Japan, has enormous experience in period dramas there.
Tumblr media
The main cast of Shōgun also features Cosmo Jarvis, British actor playing the lead in the series, which was shot over 11 months in Vancouver. Jarvis featured in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi series Raised By Wolves, as well as Peaky Blinders, where he was the tragic, shell-shocked Barney, part of the plot to assassinate Oswald Mosley.
Cosmo Jarvis, as John Blackthorne, his bestial and brooding, vibe couldn’t be any more different from Richard Chamberlain’s slickness. When John Blackthorne’s beleaguered ship drifts into a Japanese harbour where his ailing crew are taken hostage, he finds himself first used as a pawn in the local power struggles, before being appointed a samurai complete with his own army.
Tumblr media
Anna Sawai (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) as Toda Mariko, Tadanobu Asano (Thor) as Kashigi Yabushige, Hiroto Kanai as Kashigi Omi, Takehiro Hira (Gran Turismo) as Ishido Kazunari, Shinnosuke Abe (13 Assassins) as Toda Buntaro. Moeka Hoshi as Usami Fuji, Tokuma Nishioka as Toda "Iron Fist" Hiromatsu, Yasunari Takeshima (Silence) as Muraji, Yuki Kura as Yoshii Nagakado, Fumi Nikaido as Ochiba No Kata, Tommy Bastow (EastEnders) as Father Martin Alvito, Yuka Kouri as Kiku, Yoriko Dōguchi as Kiri No Kata, and Ako (30 Rock) as Daiyoin / Lady Iyo.
Tumblr media
Shōgun is Epic! Strap yourself in for a wild adventure in feudal Japan. This lavish adaptation of the classic samurai novel is a beautiful, intellectual fare that amply rewards your full attention. But be warned: it’s gruesome from the get-go. Highly recommended if you enjoy top tier drama 🎭
“Shōgun” is created for television by Rachel Kondo & Justin Marks, with Marks serving as Showrunner and Executive Producer alongside Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca, and Kondo. The series is produced by FX Productions. “SHŌGUN” PREMIERES EXCLUSIVELY ON DISNEY+ IN THE UK AND IRELAND TODAY 27th FEBRUARY 2024.

This is an obligatory John Wick: Chapter 4 review; it will most likely be extremely biased, because first and foremost, I am an utmost fan of Hiroyuki Sanada’s work, and I have special appreciation and affection for his chemistry with Keanu Reeves (47 Ronin is one of my absolute favorite movies).
Spoilers Alert!
Objective, nearly-indisputable review of the film:
The fourth installment literally embodies all the culmination of what John Wick franchise stands for, as I dare say it stands above all the action films in regards to how much variety is there, how much visceral and adrenaline-filled action choreography was there, and also, remarkable camerawork and stunt people work. Chad Stahelski’s prowess as a stuntman definitely shows as John Wick world expands globally.
Most notable action sequences are definitely the ones taking in Paris, specifically the one around Arc de Triomphe and on the steps of Sacré Cœur.
The ensemble cast, including martial arts movie icons Donnie Yen (Caine), Hiroyuki Sanada (Shimazu), and Scott Adkins. Also, definitely enjoyed the new character ‘Mr. Nobody,’ and Rina Sawayama as Shimazu’s daughter, Akira. Bill Skarsgard as the Marquis de Gramont, the all-powerful member of the High Table (aka the criminal council Wick is waging war against) was a remarkable villain as well.
LEAVE THE DOG ALONE!!
John Wick vc.: “CONSEQUENCES.”
Killing begets more killing, and also vengeful hatred (credit scene). Shimazu Koji is killed by Caine trying to protect his daughter and John Wick. Eventually his daughter will want to take vengeance on her father’s killer.
Subjective, extremely biased review of the film:
I was very excited to know that Hiroyuki Sanada’s character was an old friend of John Wick’s, Shimazu Koji, who had trained with him. He also runs the Osaka Continental Hotel!  I had more than a mere speculation that he is going to die (just like any other films Sanada has done - he has a reputation of being Japanese Sean Penn), but Shimazu died so quick and not really an hour in the movie??
I also thought Caine and John Wick’s chemistry and complicated relationship was much more compelling and intricate than the relationship between Shimazu and Wick. Obviously they exude gravitas, grace, and geniality when they share the screen and I thoroughly enjoyed that, but I really wanted to see them engage more in action sequences (preferably together, defending one another just as Wick and Caine do later in the film).
Otherwise, truly appreciated the significance of the scene they shared in the beginning (Shimazu serving Wick tea, then Japanese whiskey, I believe). And the dialogue they engage is short, but philosophical and it truly shows Shimazu’s ‘spirit of Samurai,’ as Sanada called it.

The Best — and Most Shocking — Moments at the 2024 Emmy Awards
Tumblr media
Sunday night’s 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, broadcast live on ABC, concluded with a surprising twist that left viewers talking: “Hacks” clinched the Best Comedy Series award over the favored “The Bear,” which was expected to repeat its win from earlier this year.
This year’s ceremony was the second Emmy event of 2024, following the 75th edition held in January after delays due to last year's Hollywood strikes. Consequently, "The Bear" stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach won accolades for different seasons just eight months apart.
Tumblr media
The drama categories diverged from the expected. With HBO's "Succession" absent from the competition, FX’s "Shogun" seized the spotlight. The critically acclaimed historical drama dominated, winning Best Drama Series along with Lead Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada and Lead Actress for Anna Sawai. Sawai made history as the first Asian performer to win Lead Actress. Including Creative Arts Emmys, "Shogun" amassed a total of 18 awards, setting a new record for the most wins by a single season of television.
In the realm of limited series, Netflix's psychological thriller “Baby Reindeer” made a significant impact, securing six Emmys, including Best Limited Series. Richard Gadd, who starred and wrote the series, won Best Actor for his portrayal of Donny, while Jessica Gunning took home Best Supporting Actress for her role as Martha. Gadd reflected on Hollywood’s resurgence post-strike, emphasizing that "Baby Reindeer" proved a show could succeed without established stars or existing intellectual property.
Tumblr media
Political undertones and nostalgic tributes punctuated the evening. Presenters and winners subtly referenced the upcoming presidential election, adding a layer of relevance to the proceedings. Candice Bergen, presenting the Best Actress in a Comedy Series award, joked about past political critiques of her role in “Murphy Brown,” while “The Bear” actress Liza Colón-Zayas encouraged Latinas to vote for their rights.
John Leguizamo used his platform to address the lack of authentic Latino representation in Hollywood, rebranding the term DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) as “Diligence, Excellence, and Imagination.” He spotlighted the progress made but called for further improvements in diversity.
Tumblr media
Greg Berlanti was honored with the Governors Award for his career achievements. Known for shows like "Arrow" and "The Flash," Berlanti recalled television's role in his life, particularly its comfort during his youth. He acknowledged his late mother’s support and underscored the importance of telling diverse and inclusive stories.
The Emmys also celebrated TV parents with a nostalgic nod. Iconic TV dads, including George Lopez, Damon Wayans, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, reunited on stage. Similarly, TV moms Meredith Baxter, Connie Britton, and Susan Kelechi Watson highlighted the evolving roles of women on television, reflecting on progress since the days of restrictive portrayals.
John Oliver made a memorable acceptance speech for Best Scripted Variety Show, paying tribute to his late dog, who had been a beloved part of his family. Oliver’s heartfelt remarks about his pet, despite the play-off music, struck a chord with many.
Tumblr media
Lastly, “The Traitors” emerged as a standout in reality TV, winning Best Reality Competition Series and breaking “RuPaul’s Drag Race” eight-year streak. The show, set in a Scottish castle and hosted by Alan Cumming, impressed with its high-stakes, campy drama, capturing the essence of competitive reality television.
Overall, the 2024 Emmys blended moments of surprise with celebrations of television’s past and present, showcasing both the familiar and the groundbreaking in the world of entertainment.

"Shogun": A Legendary Tale Gets a 2nd and 3rd Season
Tumblr media
Buckle up, because FX is setting sail (again) with "Shogun," Seasons 2 and 3 based on James Clavell's iconic novel. "Shogun" throws you headfirst into the captivating world of 17th-century Japan. Our protagonist, a brash English sailor named John Blackthorne (played by Cosmo Jarvis), finds himself shipwrecked on the Japanese coast. Thrust into a completely foreign culture, Blackthorne must adapt or face the consequences. His journey takes a dramatic turn when he gets entangled in a vicious power struggle within the Japanese government. Enter Lord Yoshii Toranaga (played by the phenomenal Hiroyuki Sanada). Toranaga, a powerful member of the ruling council, is fighting for his own survival amidst the political turmoil. Clavell's Legacy Lives On The first season of "Shogun" beautifully captures the essence of Clavell's masterpiece. Clavell, a master storyteller himself, based the novel on real historical events, creating a rich tapestry of Japanese culture, political intrigue, and personal transformation. This means the writers have a treasure trove of historical events to draw from for potential future seasons! Speaking of future seasons, here's the exciting part! FX, Hulu, and the James Clavell estate are teaming up to develop not one, but two more seasons of "Shogun." While it's not an official green light yet, things are definitely moving in the right direction. Hiroyuki Sanada, who stole the show as Lord Toranaga, is also signed on to return. This is a great sign for fans who were left wanting more after the first season's explosive finale. A Historically Expensive Production "Shogun" isn't just another show. It's FX's most expensive series to date, and it shows. The production value is top-notch, transporting viewers to a bygone era with stunning visuals and meticulously crafted costumes. The first season wasn't just visually impressive; it garnered critical acclaim as well. The story's captivating blend of action, political drama, and cultural exploration resonated with audiences worldwide. The show pulled in a whopping 9 million views globally across streaming platforms in just its first six days! A Long-Awaited Return Originally conceived as a miniseries, "Shogun" might just be getting a major expansion. With a talented cast, a dedicated team, and a rich historical backdrop to explore, the potential for future seasons is vast. This isn't "Shogun's" first time on the small screen. Back in 1980, a miniseries based on the novel captivated audiences. The new FX adaptation brings the story to life for a modern generation, with all the technological advancements and storytelling techniques that come with it. Whether you're a longtime fan of Clavell's work or a newcomer to the world of "Shogun," this series is definitely worth checking out. With its captivating story, stellar performances, and stunning visuals, it's a journey you won't want to miss. And who knows, we might just see John Blackthorne and Lord Toranaga return for more adventures in the Land of the Rising Sun. (Source: Variety) Read the full article

{PSA banner... I will make one. One day...}
{Cut for length, but TLDR: I tried to make them myself and failed, but I now have irl fc icons! So if you use irl fc muses, I can now rp with you without breaking your aesthetic!}
{Anyway, I'm sure a lot of you have noticed, but... I have an irl faceclaim now!!! It took me a super long time because I... really wanted to just make my own. And I struggled. God did I struggle. To even find a place to watch stuff and get scs in the first place, much less make stuff, but!!!}
Tumblr media
{Look at this. Look at it. It's barely legible at all. And I really wanted to use Yutaka Takenouchi as opposed to Hiroyuki Sanada because: }
Tumblr media Tumblr media
{I just really felt like Takenouchi's face was a little narrower and that worked better to what's going on with Hanekoma?}
{But just, literally every source I could find for watching the movies/dramas/etc. that he starred in were all really fuzzy and low quality with like, 4 pixels to their name. Which resulted in really terrible icons! And the HaNEKOma Cait Sith icons are already muddy like that, so I really didn't want his live action icons to be the same! I don't know how you guys do it, people who use actor faceclaims! I do not know how you get anything to look even remotely crisp!}
{I eventually settled with the fact that I was just a little out of my depth on this one and tried to look up some pre-made, free-to-use icons, but... But Takenouchi just doesn't have any. Not that I could find anyway, maybe I don't know how the search system for something like this works, either. I had the still icons for Sanada already from a friend that had sent them to me, but I went looking for more and got the gifs from a very talented gifmaker. So yeah. This is what I have. OTL Maybe one day I will understand how all of this works...}
{In any case, I know a handful of my mutuals use irl fcs for their muses, and I haven't really gotten a chance to rp with any of you! And that's a shame! So I figured, if the lack of consistency in our icon styles was what was holding you back from rping with me, I wanted to do whatever I could to accommodate, and now I finally can do this thing without breaking your aesthetic! I'm really hoping this can open the doors for our muses, and I cannot wait to write with you all!}
